Guide to Opening the Wii

A screw by screw guide to opening the Wii and getting to the DVD drive connector. Read each step carefully.

You will need:

  • A Phillips screwdriver
  • A Triwing screwdriver

Notes:

  • Work on a clean, dust-free surface (carpets are not good due to static)
  • Unplug all of the cables from your Wii before starting
  • Keep your screws organised (it helps to group them by step)
  • If a screw doesn't come out, find a better fit screw driver - do not re-attempt if the screwdriver is slipping as you will wear away the screw.
  • Many screws are hidden behind stickers and rubber feet and are marked as such, you must remove these before unscrewing

Instructions:

  1. On the bottom of your Wii, first unscrew the Phillips screw on the battery tray and remove the battery tray. Then remove the two triwing screws and three Phillips screws.
  2. Now, on the side of your Wii with four feet, remove the four hidden triwing screws - two are behind rubber feet and two are behind stickers.
  3. Now turn the Wii upright and open the memory card/controller panels. Unscrew the three Phillips screws along the top (take note of the longer screw as it will need to go back in the same place.
  4. You have now disconnected the faceplate of the Wii! Turn to the front of the Wii and carefully slide the faceplate off. Once this has come away you will need to very carefully unplug the connector to completely separate the faceplate from the Wii.
  5. Now turn back to the memory card/controller panels and remove the black panel by pinching between the memory card slots and carefully pulling it away. You will then be confronted by two triwing screws and two Phillips screws to remove.
  6. Now you have disconnected the Wii cover. Place the Wii on it's large flat bottom and lift the top case off the Wii. It should come away fairly easily and excessive force should not be necessary! You should now be looking at the DVD drive unit where there are four Phillips screws to remove.
  7. Now lift/tilt the DVD player away towards the top of the Wii and you will see the DVD connector beneath.
  8. Well done! Now you can go on to install Wiikey Fusion.
